The Older Population
The population age 65 years or older numbered 44.7 million in 2013 (the most recent year for which data are available). They represented 14.1% of the U.S. population, about one in every seven Americans. The number of older Americans increased by 8.8 million or 24.7% since 2003, compared to an increase of 6.8% for the under-65 population.
Future Growth
The older population will continue to grow significantly in the future. This growth slowed somewhat during the 1990’s because of the relatively small number of babies born during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. But the older population is beginning to burgeon as the “baby boom” generation begins to reach age 65.
