Get on the bus! April 28, 2016 |

Help Marin join the statewide CA4SSI effort to lift SSI recipients out of poverty

SSI reform is needed! Join us for a trip to Sacramento to testify at a CA Senate budget hearing about SSI/SSP. We need to ask our state leaders to raise benefit amounts!

The issue
Did you know that $889 is the maximum monthly benefit for an individual living on SSI/SSP? SSI, Supplemental Security Income, is income assistance for people who are 65+, blind, or disabled. That’s below the Federal Poverty Level, and less than half of what an average 1BR apartment costs in Marin! It’s nowhere near enough to make ends meet. There are 3,700 people living on SSI/SSP in Marin, and 1,300 are above the age of 65. SSI reform is needed.

The AAI Event
Get on the bus! On April 28th the CA Senate is holding a Budget Hearing on this issue. It’s our opportunity to tell them how hard it is to make ends meet on $889 a month, and to urge them to restore the cuts that have been made since 2009.
The AAI Nutrition Group will be providing a bus (and lunch) to take advocates to Sacramento on April 28th to attend a Senate Budget Committee meeting where SSI will be discussed.

What we’re asking the Legislature to do
Since 2009, SSI/SSP benefit amounts have been cut, while the cost of living has increased. No cost of living adjustment has been given for 7 years. We are requesting that the CA Legislature restore both the grant cuts and the cost of living adjustment. Please join us!
